Labs

Labs will consist of three parts:

1) PRELAB, the part to be completed prior to your lab period;

2) INLAB, the part to be completed during the lab period; and

3) POSTLAB, the part to be completed after your lab period.

You MUST complete the PRELAB portion before you will be allowed to work on your INLAB during the lab period.  This is to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the material to be covered in the lab.  The INLAB portion is to be done while someone who can answer questions and monitor your progress is supervising you, i.e. it MUST be done during an actual lab period (scheduled OR open).  The POSTLAB portion is for you to exercise your own creative ability to solve problems presented by the lab.  Once you have completed the INLAB portion of any lab, you can leave the lab, or you may stay and work on your POSTLAB portion.

For the POSTLAB, always be sure that the program you turn in compiles and runs to completion even if it does not actually accomplish the task assigned.  You will always be given partial credit for a working stubbed program.  You can get no credit for a program that does not compile.

In some cases, the instructors may ask you about the code turned in on the POSTLAB before you receive credit for it.  This is for your protection as well as to make sure that you understand the problem before advancing to the next step.

Lab Make-up procedure

To finish a lab you have already partially completed:

1)   Attend one of the Open Labs, which are available on a "first-come-first- served" basis.

2)   If and only if you need to finish the current week's lab, you may drop in on one of the regular lab sections, and obtain the instructor's permission to finish your lab.  You will have to wait for the instructor to finish the explanation before you can begin completing your lab.  Attendance of extra students is on a "space-available, first-come-first-served" basis.

To make up a lab you missed:

1)   If you are making up the current week's lab you can schedule a place in one of the regularly scheduled labs that has available seats.  You must make a reservation to attend these.  Make your reservation via e-mail to the instructor of the lab session that you want to attend.  You will be advised if a seat is available.

2)   If you are making up the current week's lab and unable to obtain a reservation in a regularly scheduled lab, you can attend one of the open labs.  However, you MUST have done the PRELAB section before you will be admitted to the lab.

3)   If you are making up a previous week's lab, you can only attend one of the open labs.  You must have completed the PRELAB portion.
