CSE 1111 Notes for
Week 1
1/16/03
- Obtain
a UT Arlington email account, or be sure you already have an email account
which allows you to send attachments and has its “reply-to” set to your
own account. If the account name
is not your own name, include your name in every email message you
send. If you are not clear on
following these instructions, stay after class for a few minutes to
clarify this.
- Send
email to Dr. Peterson from that account, with
subject: “ Intro – Your Name” (e.g., “Your Name” should be in the form:
Mary Smith.)
sent to: peterson@uta.edu
when: as soon as you obtain an
account but before 1/23/03
contents: introduce yourself
(including your name, your ID number, your email address)
and then tell a
little about yourself (including something interesting that makes
you unique ….
something you don’t mind other people knowing about.)
- Locate
the College of Engineering Ethics Statement on the class web site (see
syllabus for class web site’s URL).
Read and print it. If you
have questions about it, discuss them with your instructor. Otherwise, sign and return the Ethics

- Rather
than use a textbook this semester, we are assigning readings from the web
on certain topics. The topic for
this week is: What is
Computer Ethics? You are
to find some information about that topic on the web. Here are 2 sources to get you started
but you can certainly find others:
http://www.onlineethics.org/
http://library.thinkquest.org/26658/links.html
Answer the following questions
using resources you find on the web. If
you use any of the information from one of the web pages directly, be sure to
cite your source, i.e., include the web page address (URL) in your answer.
1)
What kinds of problems that existed prior to computers have
been changed or made more difficult thanks to computers? (Identify at least 4, and describe each in
1-2 sentences)
2)
For each one of these problems, how is it related to
ethics? (Describe in 1-2 sentences)
3)
In general, how are laws related to ethical issues?
You are to put your answers to
these questions in a text file or a Word file, and save that file for later
use. If you are not clear on following
these instructions, stay after class for a few minutes to clarify this.
