Assessment

Course grades will be based on the following:

Quizzes and class participation: 30%

 ACTIVE Participation will prepare you well for Quizzes and Exams. Students are expected to interact actively during lectures. All students are expected to solve homework problems and discuss solutions in the class.

There will be 2 quizzes.

The structure of the quizzes will be discussed in class, at least one week prior to the quiz.

Quiz 1 (15%) : September 14, 2005

Quiz 2 (15%) :  November 18, 2005

Exams: 35%

There will be ONE exam. The questions will test your ability to write and analyze algorithms. The exam will NOT test your memory. The exam will be a comprehensive open book/ notes, exam lasting for about 3-4 hours.

Exam:  October 31, 2005

Group Project/study : 35%

Students will have the option of doing a group study or group project.

Project problems will handed out at least one month prior to the expected date of completion. The students will be required to write programs and run experiments.

OR
 

Groups of students will be given a research problem to work on. Students are encouraged to come up with new and creative ideas.

A presentation of this work will  be on December 2, 2005.

·      All students are expected to be responsible users of the computer systems for this course.

·      All students are expected to pursue their academic careers with honesty and integrity. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test or other course work, plagiarism (offering the work of another as one's own), and unauthorized collaboration with another person. Students found guilty of dishonesty in their academic pursuits are subject to penalties that may include suspension from the university.

·     Students are encouraged to discuss homework with classmates, but are not allowed to copy the solutions of others or share solutions with others. All work turned in for grading must be the student's own work.

·     A public access course website will be used as a repository for all course material. This directory will contain copies of any homework assignments, course handouts, project and paper lists, notes etc.

·    Students are expected to obtain accounts on any university computers needed for this class, and to be able to access the course repository and send and receive e-mail messages.
